06/04/2024
NorCal EV Charging Incentives

If you’re a NorCal property owner or manager and you’re interested in installing EV chargers, here’s some good news: There are some incredible benefit programs out there designed to make multifamily EV charging easier and more affordable to install.

To help show you what’s possible, we put together this handy guide outlining some of the most notable programs.

Note that many are specific to different cities and utilities, so keep an eye out for any that apply specifically to you.

And also, keep in mind that the federal Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Tax Credit (also known as “30C”) is available to reduce your costs as well.

Quick note: How SWTCH can support your funding applications

Hate paperwork? Want to do your best to ensure you get the maximum benefit possible from the incentive programs you apply for?

Our team has secured millions of dollars in funding across North America, and we’ll be happy to bring our years of experience to the table to help guide you through the application process for whatever programs you’re looking at.

Often, the quality and detail of an application can go a long way toward getting the outcome you want, so it’s well worth your time to work with a good partner on any applications you make. The difference in the ultimate cost of your project can be pretty remarkable.

Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD)

With SMUD, you can see a number of benefits aimed at helping you install EV chargers and upgrade your electrical infrastructure so that you have sufficient capacity to run them.

Through the SMUD multifamily EV charging incentive, you can receive rebates of:

  • $4,500 per Level 2 charging port (connectors must be J1772, CCS or CHAdeMO)
  • $5,000 per project for transformer upgrades, only if required to make your new chargers work
  • $1,000 per project for panel upgrades, only if required to make your new chargers work

SMUD offers additional information on this program here.

Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E)

If you’re a customer of PG&E, you can receive support not only in installing new EV charging at your properties, but also in operating and maintaining those chargers once they’re in.

Through these programs, you can receive:

  • Funding equivalent to up to 100% of the costs of your EV charging project
  • Coverage for two years of networking and software fees
  • A site-specific operations & maintenance plan

Priority funding for these benefits is granted to properties in lower-income communities, or to properties that have a higher proportion of tenants with lower incomes. That said, all properties are welcome to apply, so there’s nothing to lose and very much to gain in doing so.

PG&E offers additional information on this program here.
