Unlock EV Charging Potential: San Jose Clean Energy Offers up to $50,000 Towards Multifamily EV Charging Projects

07/31/2025

Are you a multifamily property owner in San Jose looking to enhance your property and meet the growing demand for electric vehicle (EV) charging? Great news! The San Jose Clean Energy Multifamily EV Charger Assistance Pilot program is here to help you provide convenient, on-site charging for your tenants.

This fantastic incentive program offers financial support up to $50,000 or 100% of total costs to make installing EV chargers more accessible and affordable. SWTCH’s EV chargers and software are designed for multifamily properties and are all eligible for the rebate, and we have plenty of experience working with incentive programs to help make the application process simple and smooth. It’s a win-win: you attract and retain residents with a highly desired amenity, and you contribute to a cleaner, more sustainable San Jose.

What Does the Incentive Cover?

The program provides incentives on eligible costs for qualifying EV charging equipment for multifamily properties with four or more units. Funds are available on a first-come, first-served basis, so act fast!

Here’s a breakdown of the incentives available:

Equipment Type Incentive Applicable Cap on Funding
Level 2 Charging Station $5,000 per port Up to $50,000 per project site or 100% of total project costs, whichever is less
Main Panel Upgrade $5,000 per panel Up to $5,000 per project site or 100% of total project costs, whichever is less (4+ ports required)

Why This Matters for Your Property

As EV adoption continues its rapid growth, providing charging infrastructure is becoming a competitive advantage for multifamily properties. Investing in EV charging now not only meets current tenant needs but also future-proofs your asset and aligns with sustainability goals. It can help you:

  • Attract and Retain Tenants: On-site EV charging is a highly sought-after amenity.
  • Increase Property Value: Modern amenities like EV charging can boost your property’s appeal and value.
  • Contribute to a Greener Community: Support San Jose’s clean energy initiatives and reduce local emissions.

Eligibility Requirements for The Program:

  • Participant is the property owner of title, property manager, or an authorized representative of the property owner of title;
  • EVSE must be connected to a meter associated with an active SJCE customer account;
  • Installations must be voluntary and surplus—charging stations that are required to be installed by a regulation, local ordinance, building code, or other legal obligations (e.g., legal settlement, condition of lease agreement or use permit, EV-readiness ordinance) are not eligible;
  • Installations must be adding additional EVSE. Replacement of existing EVSE, whether operable or inoperable, is not eligible
  • Installations cannot be located inside private garages with access to only a single residential unit. All other parking types are eligible.

To find out if your community is eligible, please refer to the official program guide for a full list of eligibility requirements.
