New Alberta Incentive Offers 46% Rebate for EV Charging Projects

02/07/2025

Alberta is accelerating its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) with a new funding initiative aimed at expanding EV charging infrastructure across the province. This program by Alberta Municipalities (ABmunis) is offering $1.7 million in funding to help offset the cost for businesses, condominiums, and municipalities, making it an opportune moment to invest in EV charging solutions. To ensure you get funding, reach out to get your application started.

Program Overview

The Alberta government along with Alberta Municipalities is providing incentives to increase the availability of EV charging stations. Eligible applicants can receive funding to cover up to 46% of total project costs associated with purchasing and installing EV charging equipment, with a maximum of $100,000 per project location and up to $300,000 total across multiple sites.

Funding Details

The program offers varying levels of funding depending on the type of charger installed:

  • Level 2 Chargers (3.3 kW to 19.2 kW): Up to 46% of total project costs, with a maximum of $5,000 per connector.
  • Fast Chargers (20 kW and above): Up to 46% of total project costs, with maximums ranging from $15,000 to $75,000 per charger, depending on the charger’s power output.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for funding, applicants must fall into one of the following categories:

  • Businesses
  • Condominium corporations
  • Municipalities
  • Industry associations and cooperatives
  • Schools, institutions, and non-profits
  • Indigenous communities

Projects must involve the installation of new, permanent, and networked EV charging stations that are accessible to the intended users.

Application Process

Applications are evaluated based on criteria such as project readiness, the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and the ability to meet the needs of EV users in the area. It’s essential to prepare a comprehensive proposal demonstrating how your project aligns with these objectives.

There are three steps to the process of applying:

  1. Submit an Expression of Interest (EOI)
After notifying Alberta Municipalities, they will review your application to ensure you’re eligible to continue before the next step.
  2. Complete the EVCP Application
Submit project details, site plans, cost estimates, and proof of ownership or lease agreements. This must include all relevant project details and information, including a cost breakdown of the project.
  3. Sign the Funding Agreement
Once your project is approved you will receive a funding agreement, which allows the project to begin once signed by both parties. All applications will be reviewed on a first come, first served basis until all funding has been allocated so early submissions are highly encouraged.
